However facilities in the United States such as SeaWorld have not collected wild orcas in over 35 years. Nearly three years ago in response to public demand SeaWorld promised to end its orca breeding program and to phase out its orca shows. 27 of the 34 orcas on display in the US Canada Argentina Spain and France were born in captivity.

While orcas can easily swim 75 miles per day in the wild and dive hundreds of feet below the surface SeaWorlds orcas are packed into tanks just a few body lengths long. Of the five orcas currently at SeaWorld Orlando only one is. For one SeaWorld is only ending shows at its San Diego park for now meaning many of the 11 orcas at SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Antonio will still be forced to perform.

Currently SeaWorld has 20 orcas at their United States parks including five in Orlando five in San Antonio and 10 in San Diego. An additional 13 orcas reported in China and Russia were captured in Russian waters. Its also still unclear what ending the shows means.

Despite this claim of ending the shows by 2019 SeaWorld is still working on the task after closing during the coronavirus pandemic. The Orlando Sentinel reports the theme park will. Six of the seven displayed in Japan are captive-born.
